The FTP controls the charcoal canister, if the PCM reads that the fuel tank is not at correct pressure, is will open/close the Vapor Canister valve. if this doesnt open or close then you will have a P045... code, either the pressure is too high or low. I have talked to my friend who owns a 96 4.0, so far he has passed with his fuel cell and no FTP sensor, but from what i have heard the 01+ need the FTP sensor. Even then by the time you buy an external pump, the lines, and the fittings along with a fuel cell from Jegs or Summit is comes to the same price as a custom fuel cell that could be made for stock cap, and if you wanted the FTP sensor. not only that but the stock pump will bolt right up which means your fuel gauge will work correctly!

yeah i gotcha. if I had to buy all of my stuff brand new, I probably would have gone that route w/ a custom cell. Ive only got a total of maybe $150 in my fuel cell setup b/c I traded some old parts I had plus some cash for the cell and only had to buy a new pump and a few fittings.

There are two fittings on the top of my fuel cell. One is connected to the return and the other is the emissions system. I used a normal AN-8 fitting with some hose and extended it to meet the stock line.

if it has a FTP sensor, then it is regulated by the PCM, if it isnt hooked up then it will throw a code. my truck runs fine, no skipping or not bad gas milage, but it still wont pass. even if there is no CEL on, the truck wont pass b/c the computer isnt "ready" or all the tests are not complete.

96 is an older program on OBD II so its more forgiving than newer stuff.

yeah it should. just make sure you get one for a carb motor, not an EFI motor. they use two different model # pumps.
